Jump to RecipeHow Long to Roast Sweet Potatoes?
For this roasted sweet potato recipe we’ll be running the grill (or oven) at 400°F. If you like the outside of your sweet potatoes a little darker you can bump the heat up a bit, but I find 400°F works perfectly.
At that temperature, the roasted sweet potatoes will be done in about 30 minutes. The perfect amount of time to create the avocado cream sauce we’ll top the potatoes with, and open a cold beverage.

How to Store Roasted Sweet Potatoes
In the event you have leftovers, these will keep just fine in the refrigerator for a few days. That said, how they’re prepared for storage will determine how well they reheat.
You want to be sure the potatoes are completely cool before sealing them in an airtight container or zip top bag. If they’re still warm, they will steam themselves and get mushy.
For reheating, I recommend the oven or air fryer. The microwave will work, but the potatoes will get super soft and the texture won’t be that of a traditional roasted potato.
About The Sauce
I really love this avocado cream sauce on roasted sweet potatoes. The subtle flavor from the sour cream plays nicely with the sweetness of the potatoes.
It comes together in minutes and I highly recommend it for these potatoes.
How To Grill Roast Sweet Potatoes
Prep Time: 10 mins | Cook Time: 30 mins | Serves: 8
Ingredients
4-5 medium-sized sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1” cubes
2 tbsp olive oil
Seasoning
2 tsp light brown sugar
1½ tsp kosher salt
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp dried thyme
1 tsp smoked paprika
½ tsp fine ground black pepper
½ tsp onion powder
½ tsp cumin
½ tsp cayenne pepper, or to taste
¼ tsp cinnamon
Cream Sauce
1 cup sour cream
1 large avocado, peeled and seeded
1 cup cilantro
2 tsp kosher salt, or to taste
Step 1: Light your grill and set it up for two zone cooking, establishing temperature at 400°F as indicated by a reliable leave-in thermometer.
Step 2: While your grill is coming up to temperature, whisk together all ingredients for the seasoning, breaking up any clumps of brown sugar.
Step 3: In a large mixing bowl, toss the sweet potatoes with olive oil. Sprinkle one quarter of the seasoning on top of potatoes and toss. Repeat until potatoes are evenly coated (you may not use all the seasoning depending on the size of your potatoes), then transfer to a parchment paper lined baking sheet.
Step 4: Place the baking sheet on the grill grate (or in the oven) over indirect heat. Close the lid and let the potatoes roast at 400°F for 30 minutes. While potatoes are roasting, make the avocado cilantro cream.
Step 5: In a small bullet style blender or food processor, add all ingredients for cream and blend until smooth. Taste and adjust salt to your liking, set aside. Finely chop 2 tablespoons of cilantro.
Step 6: Using a fork, check to be sure the potatoes are tender by piercing them. The fork should go in with little resistance. Remove the roasted potatoes from the grill; plate and serve with avocado and cilantro cream.
