Grilled Angel Food Cake with Strawberry Puree

This grilled angel food cake with strawberry puree is about as easy of a summer dessert as it gets. The angel food cake can be picked up for next to nothing at the grocery store, but as they’re sold, they’re sort of bland.

The fix to that: the grill (or grill pan) of course. By introducing the angel food cake to some heat, the outside will char slightly, creating an irresistible texture and flavor to an often-bland dessert.

What Is An Alternative to Angel Food Cake?

While grilled angel food cake keeps this dessert light and airy, you can also use pound cake. I actually really like using pound cake but don’t always have the room in my belly after a big meal, so angel food cake it is.

Aside from cakes, this easy strawberry puree is also an excellent addition to homemade biscuits. I’m not a baker; but these killer homemade biscuits from Chef Jen at Purpose Filled Home are top shelf!

Tips & Alternatives For Grilled Angel Food Cake

Though I LOVE strawberries for the puree, you can substitute any seasonal berry that you prefer. Fresh fruit is always better, but if your favorite berries are out of season you can pick up a pack of frozen berries and you’ll still get great results.

Store the puree in an airtight container for up to five days in the refrigerator. Save it for pancakes or waffles in the morning!

If you’re looking for a way to cut a few calories from the recipe, use a sugar substitute. Clearly I’m not cutting any calories around here, but it’s an option for those who are.

I’m also a big fan of the slight tartness that comes from adding rhubarb to create a strawberry rhubarb sauce. Keep in mind, rhubarb will need to be cooked down in order to get it tender, but it’s a fun spin on this puree.

Can This Dessert Be Made Without a Grill?

Absolutely. I have my outdoor grill going most every night, so it’s a no brainer for me to use that. But, if you don’t have a grill you can absolutely make this indoors.

Get yourself an inexpensive grill pan for your stove top, or an indoor grill for your countertop and you’ll be just fine.
