Thermoworks Signals Review

Thermoworks Signals with magnet attachment

The Thermoworks Signals is a splash proof four-channel digital meat thermometer that allows you to monitor up to four different temperatures probes simultaneously.

Thermoworks Signals with Wi-Fi set up

The Signals comes with four commercial grade Pro-Series High Temp probes, three Cooking Probes to measure the temperature of up to three meats, and one Air Probe with Grate Clip to measure the temperature of your cooking chamber. The Pro-Series High Temp probes are a thermistor type. Thermistors are a good general purpose probe. The transition area where the probe and the plug connect to the braided stainless steel cable of these Pro Series probes is well built. A set of brightly colored high temperature silicon bands are included so you can quickly identify which probe is assigned to which channel.

Thermoworks Signals App on phone

The Thermoworks Signals is easily connected to your smart device using the free ThermoWorks App. This app is intuitive, simple to navigate and hassle free. It allows you to monitor the system remotely using your tablet or phone. Once the app is loaded onto your smart device you can quickly create an account with Thermoworks and connect the Signals by Wi-Fi to their cloud based service. This cloud-based service will record and store the data from your last ten cooks. You also have the option with this app to connect with the Signals via Bluetooth connection when no internet is available. The Signals can also be used as a stand-alone thermometer using the large backlit dashboard on the unit itself.

The Thermoworks Signals is built of a well-constructed plastic body with a splash proof rating of IP66 Splash-Proof. *IP is the International Protection Marking. In short, it is used to classify the protection level of an encloser from the intrusion of dust and water. The IP66 rating indicated that the Signals is dust tight and could withstand water projected in powerful jets (6.3 mm nozzle) against the enclosure from any direction. Please note, the ThermoWorks Signals is NOT designed to be submerged in water. It can however take a bit of light rain.

Thermoworks Signals meat thermometer power supply

The Thermoworks Signals has a built in rechargeable battery that should give you 16 hours of operating time. The charging port is USB C. The USB C cable and 12v power supply are included. The power supply and cord can also be used to run the Signals from a 110 volt outlet while in use. This power supply is 12 volts, most USB power supplies are not so you need to be sure to use the Signals power supply when charging. It is clearly marked.

The Thermoworks Signals housing also has strong magnets in the back of the case which allows the device to be firmly attached to a cool metal surface.

For an additional cost, the Signals also gives you the ability to add the Thermoworks Billows fan giving you a true temperature control and monitoring system for your BBQ or grill. See our full review of the Billows airflow pit controller for the ThermoWorks Signals Thermometer.

What We Loved

Like most Thermoworks products, we love almost everything about the Thermoworks Signals. The splash-proof unit is well-built and sturdy. The Signals 100% performs as advertised. The app is simple, stable and easy to navigate. The Signals is easy to operate and very intuitive. The ability to add the ThermoWorks Billows Temperature Control Fan is a real plus as well.

What Could Be Improved

There is one area of the Thermoworks Signals that we would love to see addressed by ThermoWorks. The brightly colored High Temperature Probe Rings are quickly discolored by smoke and they don’t clean up well. We attempted to clean these rings with a variety of methods from soap and water to vinegar and a few things in-between. When using your Pro Series probes with Probe Rings in a smoker we suggest rolling the colored rings down the cable a bit so they will not actually be in the cook chamber itself.

Who It’s For

Signals is for anyone needing a Wi-Fi and Bluetooth meat thermometer to track temperatures over an extended period of time in a moderate-heat cooking environment such as smoking, oven-roasting, deep-frying, homebrewing, Sous Vide and grilling. The Thermoworks Signals should not be used in areas of extremely high temperature such as broiling. Signals is not intended to be used in place of a digital instant-read thermometer, such as a Thermapen and ThermoPop.

Final Thoughts

With Signals ability to set alarms, receive alerts, view and save graphs, name channels, connects via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth it will make a great addition to your BBQ and grilling tool box. All in a well built easy to use package which is backed by one of the best companies in temperature monitoring today. We don’t see how you can go wrong with a Thermoworks Signals.
