Equipment Review: Etekcity Lasergrip 1080

Etekcity Infrared Thermometer review - side view

Cooking on a cast iron pan or griddle are both techniques I really enjoy. The problem with these techniques is not being able to reliably gauge the surface temperature. Unlike a grill or oven where you can use an ambient temperature thermometer to get an accurate temperature, it’s a bit more difficult on a flat surface.

This temperature indicator remedies that…or it’s supposed to. I bought this one from Amazon in hopes that it would provide a temperature reading on those flat surfaces. Read on for my an in-depth look at the Etekcity Lasergrip 1080.

Item Specs

  • Size: 1.5 x 4.7 x 8.1 inches
  • Weight: 6.4 ounces
  • Unit of Measure: Celsius or Fahrenheit
  • Power: 1 9V battery

What I Loved

I really liked the concept of this product and the price point (around $20) was fairly budget friendly. The handle curvatures were comfortable. The display screen was of ample size, the digits were easily readable, and the screen was illuminated. The temperature was also very quick to appear after pointing the thermometer at the target and pressing the trigger.

What Could Be Improved

Unfortunately, this unit completely stopped working after only a handful of uses. I tried changing the battery but it still didn’t work.

While that would be enough to undermine my confidence, even before it stopped working, it was not reliable. The temperature reading often fluctuated 50 degrees in either direction, even when held rock steady on an object. I had to basically pick whichever temperature showed up and hope for the best. I also didn’t like the small red dot that indicated where the temp was being taken, I found it dim and not easily distinguishable on a dark cooking surface.

Who It’s For

This infrared thermometer could be used in the kitchen for beginners and novices. It could also be used for other purposes around the house, as well.

Final Thoughts

I really liked the concept, and if it had worked as advertised, I would have been very happy —- especially given the price point.

It is possible that I just got a bad unit, as plenty of positive reviews are posted for it on Amazon. I didn’t try to return or exchange it, and the manufacturer may have sent me another unit as a replacement if I had asked. Time just got away from me and I neglected to do the Amazon return in the 30 days allowed.

All of that said, because it completely quit after so few uses, I do not recommend it.
